Ben had not been at his primary school very long having recently come from Africa. Quiet and withdrawn, the teachers rarely heard him speak. Ben was placed in a 5 week cooking class with Gavin. The first week he did not speak. During the second week Gavin brought in some seeds and explained to the children how they could grow their owns peas. ‘ I used to live on a farm in Africa’ offered Ben much to the teacher’s surprise as he had never spoken about his previous home before.
Using this revelation the team began to encourage and coax Ben to tell them about his home and asked him to bring in a traditional recipe for them all to cook. By the end of the programme in just 5 short weeks Ben was excited to attend , dancing and chatting loudly with other children.
